Double cleansing… It really is a cleansing craze!
If you’re not doing it… Why? Haha!… Seriously though, if you’re not double cleansing now keep reading to find out how this easy routine step will change your skin for the better.
Double cleansing is exactly what it says, cleansing your skin twice.
Morning and evening we all cleanse our skin; it is a part of our everyday. A quick cleanse in the morning gets rid of dead skin cells, excess oils and preps the face for moisturisers, SPF, and makeup that you will wear throughout the day. In the evening we cleanse our skin to remove the makeup, SPF, dirt, oiliness, and pollutants from through the day, but is this one cleanse in the evening enough?
If you wore makeup and cleansed your face once, could you take a clean cotton wool pad across your skin and find no remnants of makeup or dirt?… I highly doubt it.
Adding an additional cleanse to your routine will not only eliminate all makeup and day-to-day grime, it will also leave your skin cleaner and in a much better condition for your remaining skincare routine products to absorb and work efficiently.
If you suffer with oiliness and blemishes this could be the answer for a clearer complexion! The extra cleanse will eliminate the extra sebum your skin is producing and leave no “squeaky clean” tight feeling.
Some of you reading this may use makeup wipes… DA DA DAA!!
Imagine an orange was brushed over with some foundation, then taking a makeup wipe to rub off the set foundation. I saw a post the other day of this, after rubbing the wipe over the orange it still had some foundation sitting in the “pores”. So…
POINT NUMBER ONE about this post – please please please stop using the makeup wipes. They are bad your skin and for the environment. They are full of alcohol, so strip your skin of the natural oils and leave it feeling dry and tight.
POINT NUMBER TWO is they do not thoroughly cleanse your skin, as described above with the orange. So if you currently use wipes please take at least this one thing away from this post. Stop using wipes and invest in the following…
Cleanser and Flannels!
Flannels are super cheap, and you can wash and reuse them! You can get them from Boots, Superdrug, Wilkinsons or even supermarkets.
I use one a day, in the morning and reuse it in the evening then it goes in the wash.
Another point about flannels is they are a much better option for gentle exfoliation. They will help with the texture and feel of your skin and you are able to use them daily unlike traditional scrubs, which are more abrasive.
Now cleansers… I came across double cleansing from skincare-queen Caroline Hirons and I have followed her advice around this ever since.
Cleanser number one should be a balm or an oil. These formulas are perfect for working through and breaking down the makeup, pollutants, SPF, and oils.
This cleanser should be applied straight to dry skin, no need to splash your face with water first.
Massage all over face, neck, and around the eyes. Most cleansers are now gentle enough to use around the eyes.
Then wipe away with a wet flannel and warm water.
Some of my favourites are:
Cleanser number two is about treating your skin and can be the cleanser you use in the morning. I totally understand not everyone is like me and has a draw full of skincare haha!
The formulas of these cleansers will tend to be milks, gels and creams.
TOP TIP >>> If you have a spare couple of minutes spend some time massaging your face and neck, this helps with blood flow, fine lines, and congestion. All to help bring more glow to your complexion!
Apply and remove this cleanser in the exact same way.
If you’re on the lookout for a new everyday cleanser, here are some of my favourites:
When should I double cleanse?
Double cleansing is for the evening when you have worn makeup and/or SPF through the day. So there is no rule or need to double cleanse every day if you have had a makeup-free day and not been outside to wear SPF.
Do I need two cleansers to double cleanse?
You do not NEED two separate cleansers but if you have the budget I would highly recommend to, as you will be able to remove makeup efficiently and treat your skin type too.

Sped up (I never realised what faces I make when cleansing ha! It’s like concentration faces haha! )
So my lovelies… assuming you cleanse morning and night already adding this one easy step (and flannels!) could really help you get a clearer and brighter complexion!
